holidays

in 2014 i was hired pro-bono, by the interchurch refugee group to create an identity for them, in celebration of their 20th year as a not-for-profit organization. the brief was simple- an image so easy to understand, it didn’t require words.

the concept of the logo came from the idea that there is always a safe place within the church- somewhere people can call home. the flat illustration style is on trend with current design, inspired by the 2D digital world. the orangey/yellow colour was used to mimic sunshine and show the refugee group as a happy, warm and hopeful place.

once the identity was done, it was rolled out into collateral like stationery and posters. afterwards, i made some special occasion & holiday cards that can be purchased in any amount as a donation, in lieu of a gift.

love, laura

hello spring!

with mother’s day coming up this weekend, it was the perfect time for trove to send out their 2015 spring lookbook. take a peek at some of the spring goodies they have in store and check out any one of their three locations here in toronto.

to mix it up this season, i’ve added some of my handlettering into the design.

happy spring and happy mothers day to all the mamas out there!

last friday i wrapped up the design for the 2014 trove gift guide. it’s 5 pages of gift ideas for her: jewellery, canadian-designed, eco-friendly gear, and even stocking stuffers.

this year for the cover i wanted to try an illustration of their flagship store in bloor west village. using flat, cheery colours, along with the trove green, the storefront makes for a fresh and fun cover for this year’s gift guide.

if you’re in toronto, stop by one of trove’s 3 locations for unexpected fashion finds, or visit them online to order some goodies.

this year, say hello to your neighbours and #shoplocal !

Trove 2014 Gift Guide

only 15 sleeps until christmas!

well the bazaar has come and gone and it was a huge success! i’m so happy it all went off without a hitch. i saw how much work my parents put into it, let alone all the other members of the church who have been busy like santa’s elves making crafts for months.

here’s a few photos i took while setting up on the friday and then again at the bazaar on saturday.

can’t wait to see what they come up with next year!

i made letter templates for bunting banners for every booth. my mom and all her bazaar lady elves stitched them all together.

the time has come to start designing the 2013 gift guide for trove!

i pitched  the concept of a gift guide two holiday seasons ago as a change from the regular newsletters i design for trove. the owners at trove, carolyn and barbara, loved the idea that it could be made into an online flipbook (sadly for me, no real printed copies).

i’m just ramping up to start the gift guide for 2013 and can’t wait to see what goodies make it in to the book. in the meantime, check out a few pages from the 2012 guide below.

check back in december when the guide is ready for your little elf eyes!

only 43 days until christmas… get your shopping lists ready!

laura

only one week to go until the big orleans bazaar which means my parents have me working away on all the last minute pieces they need to be designed- posters, price tags, extra signage, you name it, we’re on it!

below is a few of the pieces i’ve just completed. posters for volunteer recruitment, bazaar goals and additional booth signage. come out in person and see them all together!

grab a coffee & friend for some christmas shopping next weekend, november 16 from 9am-2pm at 1111 orleans boulevard for bits of baking, carefully crafted items, vintage finds and much more!

i think i will be personally offended if this event isn’t a big success (no pressure).
hope to see you there!

so i’ve been thinking that my family and friends might hold an intervention for me any day now for my wrapping paper “hoarding”. with only 63 days left until christmas i had a thought- what about offering  wrapping as a service this holiday season?

to me, wrapping is the part of the gift giving i enjoy most, i have a massive stockpile of wrapping goodies, plus i could always use some extra cash to buy the actual gifts.

have you paid for this type of service before? would you pay for it? are you in toronto and want to pay for it?

talk to me!

christmas is only 78 sleeps away, and only 5 more saturdays until the christmas marketplace bazaar at my parents church. this means my mom will be after me for plenty of help with the printed collateral until then! here’s a few things i’ve been working on.

1. advertising displays for the tv screens in the church
2. posters for each booth…. believe me, there’s plenty of these booths and plenty more for me to do
3. kitchen menus for the tables which will be displayed in the ikea tolsby frames.

stay tuned, lots more work for me to do!

remember, santa’s always watching!

a recent trip to west elm had me falling in love with some shanna murray salad plates i now need to go back to buy. i thought their messages (in handdrawn-style fonts no less!), combined with the atypical holiday palette, were super cute and would be something special for thanksgiving dinner.

since i’m headed back to my parents for the holiday weekend, buying plates for a dinner of 15+ people is just not happening. what is happening however, is this little post i’ve compiled for a metallic mix on your thanksgiving table top.

on the corkboard: thanksgiving table top

what you’ll need (clockwise from the top left):

some gold-dipped flatware from anthropologie instead of the usual cutlery.

this beaded metallic pillar candle from pottery barn for some extra sparkle in your dimmed room

a set of basel ecru napkins from crate and barrel

some extra bling with these from gold napkin rings from zara

this set of woodland animal place card holders from pottery barn

the wide-gold-rim small wine glass from zara?
